Phnom Penh: The Cambodian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) has said that Thailand’s invasion of Cambodia, which has caused the loss of life and injury to Cambodian civilians, is a violation of the right to life.

A statement by the Cambodian Human Rights Commission on July 25 said that the Cambodian Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned and condemns the acts of aggression and gross human rights violations committed by Thailand against Cambodia. These illegal and hostile acts have seriously undermined the sovereignty, territorial integrity and fundamental rights of the Cambodian people, and are a serious violation of international and regional laws and universally accepted human rights standards.

The statement said that Thailand’s invasion of Cambodia has caused the loss of life and injury to Cambodian civilians, which is a violation of the right to life. In addition, the attacks have forced thousands of Cambodian civilians living in the border areas to evacuate, while their homes and livelihoods have been destroyed, violating their economic rights and adequate housing.

The statement claims that the airstrikes carried out using Thai F-16 fighter jets and heavy weapons, targeting and destroying parts of the sacred Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Cambodian pagodas constitute cultural and religious violations, in violation of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Disasters of UNESCO.

In addition, Thailand has committed acts of racial discrimination against migrant Cambodian workers living and working in Thailand, including physical assaults, threats and other forms of violence, in violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). The Cambodian Human Rights Committee considers these acts to be creating a climate of fear and violating the right to life and security under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
